New Governor for Lebanon’s Central Bank Today… “Lebanese Forces” the Backbone of the Government / Un Nouveau Gouverneur pour la Banque Centrale du Liban Aujourd’hui… Les “Forces Libanaises”, Colonne Vertébrale du Gouvernement
The first divergence between President Joseph Aoun and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, which emerged quite early, raised questions, especially given Salam’s reservations about Karim Soueid’s nomination for the governorship of the Central Bank of Lebanon. However, ultimately, after ministers from the “Lebanese Forces” proposed voting to avoid conflict within the government—being the true constructive backbone of the cabinet—the Council of Ministers appointed Karim Soueid as governor of the Central Bank through a vote, in which he secured 17 out of 24 votes. Ministers from the “Lebanese Forces,” “The Party,” “Amal Movement,” “Progressive Socialist Party,” and “Kataeb Party,” along with ministers affiliated with the President, voted in favor of Soueid. Meanwhile, Salam, his deputy Tarek Mitri, Minister of Culture Ghassan Salameh, Minister of Social Affairs Haneen Al-Sayyed, Minister of Administrative Development Fadi Makki, Minister of Economy Amer Al-Bassat, and Minister of Education Reema Karami abstained from voting.
