An Interview with Yevhenii Semenov, Vice President of the Ukrainian World Congress for the Middle East, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Central Asia

What are Ukraine’s most significant achievements and challenges in the war so far?

Ukraine’s greatest achievements lie in its remarkable resilience and strategic successes on the battlefield. Despite facing a larger adversary, Ukraine has managed to launch effective counteroffensives and reclaim vital territories while securing strong international support. Moreover, its ability to push the conflict into the aggressor’s territory marks a bold strategic shift, reflecting its tactical prowess and reshaping the course of the war.

However, significant challenges remain. Sustaining long-term international support, managing a severe humanitarian crisis, and planning for post-war recovery require continuous efforts and strategic vision. Additionally, while Ukrainians are at the forefront of seeking peace, achieving a just and lasting peace is a complex challenge that demands extensive international cooperation to address core issues and ensure a stable future.

What role should Lebanon and the Arab world play in supporting Ukraine?

Lebanon and the Arab world can play a crucial role in supporting Ukraine through strong diplomatic engagement and humanitarian advocacy. Given the regional challenges they face, direct military support may not be feasible. However, they are well-positioned to leverage their diplomatic channels and expertise to shape global discourse, advocate for Ukraine’s sovereignty, and promote peace initiatives in international forums such as the United Nations.

For instance, President Volodymyr Zelensky recently visited the UAE, where he had a productive meeting with His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. This meeting resulted in the signing of the CEPA agreement, aimed at strengthening economic ties, enhancing bilateral cooperation, and increasing trade and investment—contributing to Ukraine’s recovery. The UAE has also played a key role in mediating prisoner exchanges, demonstrating the region’s ability to facilitate crucial dialogue during the conflict.

Similarly, Qatar has demonstrated its commitment by actively participating in efforts to return kidnapped children to Ukraine, showcasing a strong humanitarian focus. Additionally, positive relations with Saudi Arabia and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman highlight the growing potential for Arab diplomatic support.

By increasing humanitarian aid and facilitating dialogue among international stakeholders, the Arab world can help create the conditions necessary for a just and lasting peace. Their experience in handling complex regional conflicts could contribute to mediation efforts and reinforce a rules-based international order that supports Ukraine’s struggle for freedom and stability.

Furthermore, the Arab world should back key humanitarian initiatives in Ukraine, such as the “Grain from Ukraine” program, which has helped 20 million people combat hunger, and the newly launched “Food from Ukraine” program. These efforts not only reflect a commitment to humanitarian values but also contribute to global food security.

How has Ukrainian society changed since the war began? What are the biggest cultural or social transformations?

Since the outbreak of the full-scale war, Ukrainian society has undergone a dramatic transformation. A deep sense of national unity and a collective desire for a just and lasting peace have united citizens from all regions, boosting civic engagement and volunteerism. Volunteers from all walks of life—including prominent figures in music, art, cinema, theater, comedy, and dance, as well as former and current politicians—have stepped up to defend the nation.

The cultural landscape is also experiencing a revival, with renewed focus on preserving and celebrating the Ukrainian language, arts, and traditions as symbols of resilience and national identity. Notably, the war has led to a decline in Russian cultural and linguistic influence—an enduring legacy of historical ties—further strengthening Ukraine’s distinct identity.

What message would you like to share with the Ukrainian people as they continue their fight for their homeland’s survival?

To the people of Ukraine: Your courage and resilience serve as beacons of hope for the entire world. Every step you take embodies an unbreakable spirit that inspires the global community. Despite countless hardships, Ukrainians remain united and steadfast in their pursuit of a future built on freedom, democracy, justice, and lasting peace.

Remember that the world stands with you, and we—65 million Ukrainians worldwide—are united by our shared heritage and unwavering commitment to Ukraine’s survival. The sacrifices you make today illuminate the path toward a brighter tomorrow.
