MP Geagea: We Grant Confidence to the Government and Look Forward to a New Lebanon on Behalf of the People

By the Lebanese Forces Website Team

MP Strida Geagea spoke during the general session to discuss the ministerial statement, saying:

“Mr. Speaker Nabih Berri, fellow MPs,

Before beginning my discussion on the ministerial statement, I would like to reaffirm our stance on the Palestinian cause, which is based on the full adoption of the resolutions of the 2002 Beirut Summit, including the two-state solution and the establishment of a sovereign Palestinian state to end the suffering of the Palestinian people.

We gather today around a government whose formation has been long awaited, just as we have long awaited the birth of a new era. An era we have paved the way for through years of continuous struggle—martyrdom, imprisonment, steadfastness, and determination.

This is an era whose principles were clearly and decisively outlined by the President of the Republic in his inaugural speech—an era of a serious and capable state, where the only arms permitted are those of the legitimate authorities. A state that adheres strictly to the constitution and international legitimacy, making its decisions based on its own will and interests, not on foreign dictates or regional power struggles. A state committed to comprehensive structural, economic, and financial reform, rather than one characterized by chaos and rampant corruption.

Mr. Speaker,

This is the era of transition to a long-awaited new phase, with a first government for which we provided all possible facilitations in its formation, ensuring that it comprises competent and specialized ministers. We were the first to propose the formation of a technocratic government on September 2, 2019, during the well-known Baabda meeting—nearly five and a half years ago. However, our call went unheard, leading to the outbreak of the October 17 Revolution later that year.

Mr. Speaker,

Allow me to take this moment to salute the leader of the Lebanese Forces Party, Dr. Samir Geagea, who today heads the largest parliamentary bloc and one of the biggest political parties. I salute him for his sacrifices, as he has never sought personal glory for himself or his party members. Unlike others, he has never imposed conditions or counterconditions. He facilitated the birth of this new era and its first government. All he has ever wanted, and all that we want, is to build a state that fulfills the dreams of the Lebanese people—a state that restores Lebanon to its former glory and places it among the ranks of developed and prosperous nations.

Mr. Speaker,

We entrust you with the responsibility of establishing a real state in Lebanon, beginning with restoring full sovereignty over all Lebanese territories and reclaiming the decision-making power on war and peace exclusively within the government, by implementing the relevant provisions of the Taif Agreement as well as international resolutions 1559, 1680, and 1701.

More than four years have passed since the Beirut Port explosion, yet justice has not been served. The failure to deliver justice in this case is a crime equal to the explosion itself. We entrust you with ensuring justice is served under the principle of ‘no escape from accountability and responsibility.’ We urge you to push for the immediate initiation or completion of long-stalled judicial investigations into numerous corruption cases and legal reports we have submitted in the past, which have not been handled with the necessary seriousness and determination.

We also entrust you with ensuring justice and holding the perpetrators accountable in the assassinations of our comrades Elias Al-Hasrouni, Pascal Sleiman, and Roland Al-Murr.

Mr. Speaker,

The depositors’ funds did not vanish—they were stolen, squandered, and used to finance corruption and clientelism. People’s lifelong savings were lost due to policies and practices that must now be reversed. Serious action is needed to recover depositors’ funds.

Regardless of the representation of the Lebanese Forces in this government, what truly matters is that the president’s inaugural speech and the ministerial statement align with our vision for state-building.

Therefore, we will grant confidence to this government because it is not subject to a blocking third for any party, as was the case in the past.

We will grant confidence because the principle of separating parliamentary and ministerial roles has been applied in its formation. After all, how can an MP, responsible for overseeing the government’s work, simultaneously be part of that very government?

We will grant confidence because this is a technopolitical government that includes politically aware specialists, provided that ministers sign a pledge not to run in the next parliamentary elections.

Our confidence is conditional on good governance and adherence to the promises made in your ministerial statement. Just as we have the courage today to grant you our confidence, we will also have the same courage to hold you accountable and question any minister who fails, neglects, or mismanages.

Before concluding, I commend the efforts of our allied MPs, Fouad Makhzoumi and Ashraf Rifi, for facilitating the Prime Minister’s designation process.

Finally, our mandate comes from the people, and we remain loyal to them. We are entrusted with their dreams and sacrifices, and on their behalf, we look forward with you to a new Lebanon. The opportunity is before us today—do not waste it again!

Long live Lebanon!”
